NFL Monday's - PACKERS @ VIKINGS

VIKINGS d 7 14 7 2 30
PACKERS _7 7 _0 9  23

Hmmm. Brett Favre has still got it.

Brett Favre through for 3 touch downs (271 yds) for the 68th time in his career. His second TD pass waa an 18 yard off balance pass to Rice.

Aaron Rodgers by no means had a bad game 26-37 384yds 2 TDs, proving that Green Bay did make the right move a little over a season ago, it's just that Rodgers had no pass protection, getting sacked 8 times. Stopper Jarred Allen being credited with 4.5 of them. He certainly does have one of the best arms in the NFL, maybe only behind Rivers of the Chargers.

But the Vikings sure do look good - with the best running back in the game, Adrian Peterson, and Favre - the Vikings can attack both in the air and on the ground. With Favre startibng to find his groove, that will only provide better opportunities for the most dynamic RB in the NFL as the season progresses. Tonight the Packers contained the ground, holding Peterson to only 55 yards (only 11yds in the 2nd half), including a fumble forced by Clay Mathews who ran the 40 yards to the endzone.

However, Green Bay's 3-4 defense could not do it all, with Favre having all the time in the world to make play after play after play. Green Bay's shortcomings at safety were really highlighted with Favre havning his first game of the season where he threw 10 yard plys throws. The focus on Peterson sure gives The Vikings a double pronged attack.
Coupled with the best running defense in over the last season and a bit, the Packers did  well to keep it close. With Rodgers throwing the ball, anything is possible, he has a great arm but Green Bay need to improve on the front line. Rodgers has alreadty been sacked 20 times this season.

Palm Springs Day 4

Today was cool for me. Not so much for Sherry who had a full day of exhibiting and then 'schmoozing' afterwards. Turns out her day would be around 16 hours long or so. Yuck! I'd hate to have to be 'on' for that long.

I bummed around editing a few basketball teams, watching some espn pregame then thought I should head down for and check out the hotel before lunchtime and see what was around.

I walked around the pools - and it looked pretty sparse in terms of people. There were 2 large pools from what I could see and two spas. The hotel also had a cool inside docking area for a boat. I wodner how far the boat took people. Also on the bottom level there were heaps of bird cages.

These two birds wree cool. They just wanted to look at you from whatever side you moved to. This involved them commando crawling upside down across the top of the cage. I must get my act together and start uploading video files to my blogs.

There were a few other cool birds, but none up to the first two I saw.

On the second level was the lobby including bar, starbucks and elevators. Oh yeah - down the bottom level on the inside was how you got to all the restaurants.

After digesting the layout I went upstairs for a bit before returning for some sunbathing/swimming/alice in chains ipod action/magazine reading. It was ncie to be out an soaking up the sun and just relaxing by myself.

In the afternoon I went for my first drive by myself. Wow! It was really cool and, dont't get me wrong I love Sherry's company, but it was ncie to be out feeling a bit more independant. I paged downstairs first off to get the car brought around. The girl had no idea what 'How are you going?' meant. Anyway got downstairs and tipped the dude a fiver.

Looking over from the Pool - across the lake to a golf hole

Then I plugged in Ralph's. Drove there with Alice in Chains playing on the ipod (just through its own speaker) - got some nibblies for tonight's big NFL Game - between the Hawks..and the Swans...That ball-chaffing Tour de France cycling classic is on again.. We'll have highlights for you of week two!\...as the riders approach the halfway mark.

Nah tonight the Packers and Vikings are playing at the Metrodome. A massive game in my mind. You have the former Packers QB Brett Favre (one of the best ever) going against his old team for the first time and playing for a major rival of the Packers, the Vikings. Favre didn't leave Green Bay on good terms, and was not the most helpful with new QB Aaron Rodgers. So tonight's game has a lot going for it.

After Ralph's went to get some Pizza. I had plugged in pizza\into the GPS and saw that there was a place called 'Donato's' so I thought I should head there just for Donut's sake. Wouldn't you know it? It was closed. Just like Donut's. All advertising, but does nto deliver. hahah. nah respect to Donut.

So then plugged in All Pro Pizza, by this stage the GPS had stopped giving me directions so I had to pay close attention to the screen. Anyway eventually found it and pulled in. Turns out I should have just stayed there to watch the game. Pizza, beers, 3 big plasmas, guys giving out raffle tickets. It would have been great. But yeah i got my take away $26.95 pizza and headed home.

The GPS started talking again. But in German! Got home and chucked on the game. The reception was pretty ordinary in parts, but the pizza made up for it. It was a good game, pity about the result. Still, Rodgers had done well only to be let down by his offensive line, while Favre had done really well too throwing for 3 touchdowns.

I had bought some beers at the Supermarket, intending to drink them during the game. I'm a big an of Newcastle stout so bought some of those. But at the hotel room there was no bottle opener. Never fear - I used the door handle of the room to open them. So it a bit of a bashing process.

Late at night - around 11.30 Sherry got back and it was decided we were all going swimming! Leslie came out of her robe , sort of lookinhg like a boxer. Sherry and I were going to be her entourage and give her a big entrance to the pool area. haha. Leslie and I had a quick splash in the big pookl and then we all sat in the spa. The 'I want to be Murray' blog should really be started after today. Great day.

NFL Preview

ITS AN NFC NORTH SHOWDOWN

Being reasonably new to the NFL, I've begun now to understand the significance of each game. With teams only playing roughly 1/4 of an NBA schedule the impact of each W is much greater meaning you cant afford to 'take a night off' as some teams do in sports with a much longer schedule.

This next point makes even more sense, areally nd is also an equally simple premise to understand, inter-divisional games mean everything. The chance to effectively cause a 2 game swing in your division is huge and with only one team from your division making the playoffs - these games mean everything. Kudos to the NFL because it makes for massive rivalries.

This brings us to tonight's Monday Night Football showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. Asides from these two being fierce rivals a certain player who knows how to throw a football is adding a little bit of extra spice to an already spicy dish.

Brett Favre, arguably the greatest quarterback to ever put on a helmet, and definetely the greatest quarterback to retire twice and return. He may not be the Michael Jordan of football, but many are sceptical and you could draw similaities to MJ's hit but mostly miss return to the NBA with the Washington Wizards.

MJ looked great after shedding the initial rust, but eventually could not handle the wear and tear of a full season, with knee tendinitis. Brett Favre's struggles to be effective after the first 12 games are also a concern. Can his 40 year old body carry the Vikings through a full regular season schedule and into the playoffs, in a season where the Vikings are ready to win NOW?

Favre has already returned the faith shown to him by the Vikings, who signed him to a one year 12 million dollar contract in the offseason, with last week's game winning pass to Greg Lewis with 2 seconds left to beat the 49ers.

The question is: How many more of these does Favre have left in him? The season is only in it's infancy and will he even be able to stand up in January.
Tonight's game just means so much. If Green Bay win the decision to let go of Favre two seasons ago will seem justified. If the Vikings win, it will be a true 'in-your-face' to their biggest threat in the NFC North.

Aaron Rodgers, has started well this season and is well on the way to being a premier QB in the NFL. Statistically, he is head and shoulders ahead of Favre, but he hasn't thrown that last second TD yet which Favre has done time and time again. Rodgers needs to gain the experience and clutch that has Favre surpass even Elway and Marino in many people's minds as the greatest of the greats. For Rodgers, only a Frank Lombardi Trophy will do that.

Rodgers is the goods, but Favre has been there and done that. Despite this fascinating and alluring headline to tonight's show piece the game will not be decidsed by the Favre vs Favre 2.0 contest.

GAME KEY

Will the Packers 3-4 defense work against a Vikings offense which seems to focus on a short passing game and a Peterson led ground attack? Phil Loadholt's intial shortcomings in pass protection wont be as evident.

Will Packers OLT Chad Clifton play? The packers front line has been an absolute shambles so far. Rodgers can throw the ball -but he does need something more affective than a dandy lion in front of him. If Clifton doesn't play you can expect Jarred Allen to have a field day on the pass rush.

Palm Springs Day 3

Well we were up early this morning. I felt really tired after only two hours sleep but after being in the back of a Hummer for 10 minutes in the freezing cold I was definitely awake. It wasn't so much cold, despite being 8.15 in the morning, it was the wind chill factor. We were sitting in the back row of an open air hummer and with the car doing 40 mph and it being a windier day than usual it was pretty cool.

The guy who gave us the tour was a nice enough bloke. Bit of a ladies man - probably because most of his clientel are women over 40. He did say something funny when referring to the geological plates - he said 'Magma" in the Dr Evil voice.

But yeah it was the tour guide, 4 tennis wives, the tour guides female friend, and Shez and myself. Our first stop was at a group odf palm trees where the american and pacific plates met - aka The San Andreas fault line. There was  a fair bti of water around here, which i guess makes sense considering there is minimal crust to prevent water from rising to the surface. In the little water pools there were tiny fish. A guy actually lived in a hut out here for 60 years (from 1932-1992).

We then headed up into Joshua Tree National Park. We drove along what was once the Colorado river which fed Los Angeles. It turns out that ages ago 4 rivers from teh hills went west towards L.A while south the Grand Canyon was formed. Now most of the water is underground. Driving through here it was like driving thruogh a wasteland. It was Mordor revisited with loose stones, rocks and really grey dirt.

We had seen this kind of landscape last time we were out in the desert, but this was the first time we had seen it up close. Along this river bed you could see where an aqueduct was built, and we also saw a mountain lion den.

The river bed eventually split in two - as we were steadily climbing - starting at about 1000 feet above sea level we would climb up to about 3500 feet. We needed to get up this high to get into Joshua Tree's natioonal habitat -they don't grow below 3000 feet.

If you were running this tour you would have to love 4wdrivnig - theonkly thing was - it wasn't really anything too tough. The hummer only came into its own in one section. The hummer has a unique advantage over other 4wd's because it has 4 axles as opposed to just 2. This means more traction even when going over really uneven terrain. But any 4wd could have navigated our trail - i think the Hummer was more used because it can move around 10 people..

Ninja!

We got out at one point and then climnbed a hill on foot to get a nice view of the surrounds. Sherry and I were a little disappointed by the tour - it was pretty lame - needed more decent 4wdriving and some cooler things to see.

When in the desert watch out for pricks and cougars

On the way back a Volvo wagon was caning down the track - we only hoped that they stopped before they got to the one tricky part of the track where having a fourbie is a must. Sure enough they had stopped in time and were turning around just before that point.

The stupid canopy on the car that was there, i guess for sun protection, was really giving us the irrates. It was really loose and in the wnid kept on flicking us in the face really hard. When we got out on the open road a combination of the wind and an extra hard flicking sent my sunglasses flying. I alsmost saved them. I had them, I didn't have, I have them, and then smash, To rub salt into the wounds I then got flicked by the canopy right on the eyelid. Yeah - keen to get out of the humvie.

The last shot of me with the aviator's. Farewell Sunglasses. Thou hast served well.

We were covered in dust when we got back to the hotel, but we had time for a quick shower before late checkout. We then thought we'd get somer lunch. Sherry had to setup the IMS exhibit by 4pm so it would be a tight squeeze.

We went to Little Carl's which make nearly even better burgers than In&Out. They have too many options here though. You can either get Mexican (which did look good) or just simple burgeres (like the Big Carl which is cheaper and better than a Big Mac) or Gourmet burgers which is what we had. I had a Shitaki mushroom burger and it was 'to die for' haha. Nah it was really nice. The $5 burgers are just massive. The chips were even better here. At In and Out they were all natural but jsut tasted of nothing. Here at Carl Jnr's they tasted like potato skins - kind of liek the ones Sherry makes.

Befoer this we'd driven through some industrial area looking for a diner so time was slipping away, then carl's our burgers took ages to come, then we went looking for a basketball magazine. Drug store no go, Borders - missing, okay lets go to the hotel - ah there's Borders. So I ran in after not finding a park and bought Sporting News bball which previewed the season and a copy of an NFL Newspaper. We then drove up to the hotel. Whew! okay lets get through the boom gate - unloaded the marketing material - park the car - setup. Gawd! Enough stress for me for the day.

We checked into the hotel. Our room was sweet with a nice pattio area with a good view of the mini golf course, the fir\e pit and a couple of holes of the main golf course. All i can remember doing that night was editing basketball teams. I was prety knackered. Sherry ahd to go for a meet and greet down at the convention area.

Oh yeah - thats right - we all went out for tea. It was pretty swish, we were dining with Darryl, Leslie and some of their felllow exhibitors. It was all a bit unexpected to all of a sudden be dining with mature professionals. Let me put that cap on. Yes! It still does just fit. Sherry and I shared an appetizer where we basically had to lick the plate to eat it - I then had Lobster ravioli as a main. Not much of it but really nice.

They were all really nice people, 3 of them from one company similar to Research reporter, but based in Boston. The other lady who was there was from a town halfway between Boston and New York - I think New Hampshire? But yeah - what a dilemna to be from there. 1/2 way between two really fierce rivals. People would be barracking for either team. I can imagine a lot of street fights going on there if it wasn't for the cold weather. Riverside!....

We then had 'a night cap'. So yeah drinks and merryment continued on until around 11.30. Then back to the hotel room and bed.

Palm Springs Day 2

Today we had it in mind to relax. Boy I needed it. Nah of course I didn't. But Sherry has been on the go for so long and we thought it would be nice to just kick back at the resort the whole day.

So we headed down to the lobby and had a buffet breakfast. Omelette were available and were cooked by a chef hwoever there was no Eggs Benedict, well there was\, but if you wanted it you had to order that seperately. They had fruits, bagels, toast, pancakes and pastries. I think next time I'll just order something off the menu though - I can never quite get it right with the buffet.

Birds were everywhere. They statted drinking the milk out of a can on one of the tables next to us.

After this we did head out, as I needed some togs and Sherry needed shoes for tomorrow's Hummer expedition. So we went to, of all things, a Westfield Shopping Centre! Payless shoes came thruogh with shoes for both of us and Seers delivered the goods in the swimmers department. We got back to the resort and were poolside by midday.

We stayed here for most of the afternoon, the pool was a bit on the cold side, but some pool side Bloody Marys helped warm us up, if the sun didn't.

Sunbathing sure is exhausting. After eating some Panda Express I was full as and fell asleep at around 8.00. Panda Express was sweet. Soup (hot+sour) + 3 main's (kung pow shrimp, chicken & mushroom, spicy beef + noodles) was delicious. I slept until around 11.30 and then couldn't sleep.

So I played some Stones and Bones Pinball Fantasies and beat the high score twice. First off i got 109,000,000 which was nice, but still was off my 125,000,000 unrecorded effort. However a little later in the morning (around 3.30am or so) I had another go and notched up an impressive 190,000,000. I still can smash that score.

I finally got to sleep around 5.30, but had to be up in a little under 2 hours for the Hummer tour.

Palm Springs Day 1

I dont know what I'm more excited about - We're off to Palm Springs today for 4 days of pool side action or that i finally got Dosbox to work.

Sherry arrived home at about 1.15 in the arvo, I was keen to leave ASAP to beat the L.A traffic which I was thinking would be like the Monash Carpark on steroids. We finally hit the road around 2.15, stopping to get fuel, before getting on the Mission St, entrance to the 101. Mission would prove to be an apt street to enter on, as the drive sure was a mission.

Maybe the traffic was bad due to the pumpkin storm?

First off the drive on the 101 - supposedly bypassing the Santa Barbara traffic prooved to be a myth. It was an absolute crawl through the Santa Barbara city limits. I was looking at the estimated time of arrival on the Satnav increase from, first 6.10pm to 6.15, 6.30 and on and on and on.

One of the few quite moments headnig into L.A - kind of near Burbank

It still was fun, although a bit white knuckle as it was my first taste of driving in peak hour traffic around Los Angeles. Traffic was crap really. Sherry said that it was pretty good, but OH REGINALD! I reckon I was in peka hour traffic for a good three hours. Considering the drive to Palm Springs was only supposed to be a 3 1/2 hour trip you get an idea of how crap it was.

This car pool lane action isn't doing it for me. It's Reggie time me thinks.

The ugliest car in the history...

Coupled with an In and Out pit stop our ETA was sent deep deep DEEP undercover. I'm posing numerous theories about why In & Out Burger is called 'In & Out' because it certainly doesn't relate to the speed at which you get your burger. The burgers were sure worth the wait though. You can only order 4 burgers (kind not total) - so it's a pretty basic menu (you think this would speed up the process - but no - they go and slaughter the cow after you tell them what you want). We both had double doubles - double meat and double cheese - but you also get lettuce and tomato on them too. Oh yeah - and make sure you ask for onions. They can kmake or breake a burger. Wow! It was good - 10 times better than the Mighty Dangus which is probably the best meat burger I've eaten in Oz. My stomach felt okay afterwards so that dispelled one theory about the In & Out..

Mmm! Mmm! This IS a tasty burger!

What was really frusttrating was that i was in the Carpool lane. While it did prove to be less stressful as you didn't have cars cutting in and out of your lane it was by no means quicker than the lanes to our right.

We did see some pretty cool stuff on the way. Some overpasses, some cool views of the swmog in L.A at sundown, a brush fire on the side of the road, some really dodgy lane markings on the road, cool colours in the sunset that reminded of an old PC flight sim game, and traffic. Did I mention the traffic?

Dear Sir/Madam, Fire. Exclamation mark. Fire. exclamation mark.

I nearly got cleaned up by a truck on the CA 62 (I think it was), as it pulled into my lane I had to slam on my brakes. Turns out he probably didn't see me as the car we were driving had one bung headlight. Good old U-Save - perhaps they should change their name to U-Crash or U-Die.

Our room was pretty mental. Nice big plasma and a full step-down lounge area. There were heaps of pools at this place. Something we'd take advantage of in the next couple of days.

 The Alien birthing pool

We finally arrived at about 8.10 pm, had a bit of a look around the hotel and then scooted back to the comforts of our room.

Gutterballs!

Well had a Big Lebowski day today pretty much slothing around the house until Sherry came to get me after her shopping to watch the movie down at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. I spent the day playing Tecmo Bowl - beating the Atlanta Falcons with a great come from behind win. 16-14. Then I watched Two and a Half Men - The bat rastard.

Also it was opening night of the NHL season. So watched a bit of Capitals and Bruins. I saw the first goal but then missed Ovie getting his 2 goals and 1 assist. I did watch the highlights the day after and he did the best hit on Mark Retchie. Capitals won 4-1.

Then I saw the game between the Leafs and the Canadiens. What a great game. Went into overtime with the Habs sneaking a goal with 13 seconds left in OT. Great start to the season.

Sherry was a bit late getting home, but we made it down to the Courthouse about 15 minutes after the start. Before the movie they had a siloent auction and a special guest appearance. May have been 'The dude' himself, Jeff Bridges, as he lives in Montecito. But yeah we got there about 20 minutes into the movie.

Everyone fully cheered when John Torturo made his appearance as 'Jesus'. They went off when he did his little dance after bowling that strike.

I've never really watched the movie before, or havent enjoyed it, but I did this time. It was so funny. It will be a great memento of Santa Barbara.

Haha - This is what happens when you %&# a stranger in the arse!!
